Abstract

The three-tiered accreditation approach piloted by the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), a regulatory body, grouped PPMVs into three based on their training in health; Tier 1 (no health background), Tier 2 (health-related qualifications) and Tier 3 (pharmacy technicians). The provision of implant and injectable contraceptives among Tier 2 and 3 PPMVs vary significantly even after receiving the same training. The project categorized the trained PPMVs’ provision of implants and injectables as low to high performance according to the number of injectables and implants provided within a year. This study assessed the characteristics and factors associated with the provision of implants by PPMVs after receiving training, and explored enablers and hindrances of PPMVs providing implants insertion in the community using the COM-B model.

The dataset includes 384 Tier 2 and 3 PPMVs providing implants who participated in a structured, quantitative, face-to-face survey as part of a mixed-methods design conducted in Kaduna, Kano and Lagos states of Nigeria in September 2024. A qualitative study was also conducted using in-depth interviews with 57 trained PPMVs (from the 384 Tiers 2 and 3 PPMVs) providing implant services across same three Nigerian states (Kaduna, Kano and Lagos). Qualitative data were analyzed thematically and mapped onto the COM B framework to identify key enablers and barriers across capability, opportunity, and motivation domains.
