Abstract

Guatemala has faced great challenges in guaranteeing access to secondary education to its inhabitants, especially young women who face greater challenges to continuing their school life. Confronted with this reality, the Population Council joined the efforts of the General Directorate for Alternative Education of the Ministry of Education of Guatemala to bring secondary education closer to the communities. This is being achieved by incorporating the Flexible Modalities for the Basic Secondary Cycle program as a key component in serving the young population most excluded from the school system. Through its design and elaboration, this curriculum guide offers a resource to students and teachers who are participating in the Flexible Modalities program. By design it develops competencies in all curricular areas focusing on community knowledge, its promotion, and sustainable development. It also offers resources for working at home, working with the teaching staff, and carrying out activities together with classmates.
