Abstract

The Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya is a long-term program being implemented by Population Council – Kenya. The initial two-year program for girls 11–14 years old in Wajir County, a marginalized county along the border of Somalia with low rates of girls' school enrollment and high rates of child marriage, combined program activities that address inequitable gender norms at the community level, a household cash transfer conditioned on girls being in school and girls' empowerment clubs with health and economic empowerment content. Population Council Kenya used a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the impact of the program and found that it had short- and long-term impacts on girls schooling and timing of marriage. This video describes the program and its potential for scale.
